When children’s permanent molars start coming in, they face increased risk of decay. New molars may have deep fissures that are hard to keep clean. Even kids with great oral hygiene can fail to notice the buildup of plaque at the bottom of hard-to-reach crevices.

If plaque accumulates on the teeth for too long, it can lead to holes in the teeth.

We check kids’ teeth as their six- and 12-year molars come in. If we notice any spots that look hard to clean, we recommend fissure seals to prevent tooth decay. We’ll start with a deep cleaning, then seal up the fissures to keep the surface of the tooth smooth and easy to brush. We’d rather care for the tooth while it’s new and healthy than come back later to fill in holes caused by decay.
