At Dental Hub Geelong, we offer porcelain crowns and bridges that are custom made dental restorations that can improve the appearance and function of your smile. We only use porcelain crowns and bridges made here in Australia as they are of superior quality.

Bridges are used for those who have missing teeth and don’t like the idea of having a denture (a denture or plate is a removable item to fill that gap). The bridge is a tooth-like structure that’s supported by natural teeth on either side – its permanent – and allows you to eat confidently, without your other teeth tilting or moving in the gaps. A bridge can be used as a solution for a single missing tooth, or multiple missing teeth.

Crowns, or “caps” as they are also called, are custom-made ceramic covers for teeth that have had a root canal , cracked or weakened teeth, or teeth that are severely decayed to the point where a regular filling isn’t sufficient.  When you have a big filling, or very little natural tooth structure, then the option for a crown will allow you to eat with confidence.

Crowns can be used for a single tooth or several teeth where each tooth is given a protective coating of porcelain that helps maintain the strength of the tooth long-term.

What does the process involve?

First, your dentist will examine your mouth and the areas surrounding the missing tooth to determine whether a dental bridge is appropriate for your situation.

If you’re an ideal candidate for a bridge, the teeth that are on either side of the missing tooth-the ones that will provide the “anchors” for the bridge-will be prepared for crowns.

An impression is taken so that the bridge will fit precisely into the space and blend flawlessly with your existing teeth. The first visit ends with your dentist inserting a temporary bridge to protect the area until the permanent bridge is ready.

At your next and final visit, the permanent bridge is cemented into place. If you take care to practice good oral hygiene and maintain your proper dental cleaning and examination schedule, your new bridge should last for many years.

We use a 3D scanner to take measurements of the tooth so the crown can be fitted exactly to your tooth size, shape, and colour. The procedure usually requires two visits about two weeks apart. The first visit takes about an hour and the second around 30 minutes.   The 3D scanner is more precise, and is better for the environment than conventional methods.

At the first appointment, we prep the tooth by making it small enough for the crown to fit over it snugly. Next, we mold an impression of the tooth to allow the crown to fit between the teeth on either side of it and is about the same size and shape as the one being capped. At the end of this appointment, we attach a temporary crown to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready.

When you return for your second visit, we will affix the permanent crown to your tooth and ensure that it feels comfortable and natural and that your bite is correct.

How to Take Care of Crowns & Bridges

Once we’ve fitted the final crown and bridge you should schedule your normal 6-monthly checkup and clean. Your home care should include brushing at least twice a day and flossing once daily around your restoration as you would your normal teeth.
